Preparing for new struts
Corroded struts (the diagonal cross braces between the piles) are being replaced in stages.
The first stage is to replace the top and bottom collars which fix them to the piles - the old rusted bolts need to be cut, heated and finally clobbered (technical term) with a big hammer to be removed.
Once the top and bottom collars have been replaced the strut can be changed simply by removing the new bolts, slotting the new strut into position and then replacing the bolts again.
By working in stages the tide does not interfere with progress.
