Trapezia - a photograph opportunity easily missed unless you're really looking!
Trapezia - a photograph opportunity easily missed unless you're really looking!
I had two more minutes of my 15 minutes of fame on Tuesday morning. BBC Somersetsound interviewed me as part of a discussion on observation skills. It was early in the morning so I'll forgive you if you missed it!

I gave a couple of hints on how to look more closely at your surroundings. It is possible to train yourself to spot good photograph opportunities in just the same way a policeman trains to notice crucial details at a crime scene.

I referred to my picture of the pylon "Trapezia" as an example of how familiarity can deaden the senses unless you practice. I pass this scene most days but only get the briefest of glances at the point where the picture was taken - I'm sure I would have missed it had I not been practised in looking!

You try it next time you travel to work - don't let the autopilot take over - be consciously more observant and if you do it often enough you'll find it comes naturally!
